Choose the arrival route
Land close, get settled, and use the first evening for Ocean Avenue, beach air, and a dinner walk instead of freeway time.
Use Highway 1 for coastal views or US-101 when the priority is a more direct arrival. Construction and traffic can change both.
Check Caltrans before departure. Highway 1 is open through Big Sur as of this review, with one-way traffic controls and possible delays near the Carmel Highlands and Rocky Creek Bridge.
Highway 1 via Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz adds coastal sections and variable traffic. US-101 South toward the Monterey Peninsula is usually the more direct route. Check live travel times before choosing.
US-101 is the dependable through route. Highway 1 north through Big Sur is much slower and should be chosen only after checking Caltrans conditions, daylight, fuel, and the day's traffic.
The closest airport to Carmel. Airline routes change seasonally, so compare the current nonstop schedule before assuming a connection.
A larger airport with more route choices. The drive uses US-101 and can stretch well beyond 90 minutes in traffic.
The broadest long-haul option of the three, but Bay Area and peninsula traffic can add substantial time to the Carmel drive.
Carmel's street parking is free, but the central commercial district commonly uses two-hour limits during posted hours. Vista Lobos at 3rd and Torres provides free all-day parking; Scenic Road has free beach parking where signs permit. The village core is compact enough to cover on foot after parking.
Time limits vary across the village, and special events can change access. Use city parking signs and the current Carmel parking map rather than assuming every free space is all-day.
