Shorter: stay in the village
Visit the Court of the Fountains and Doud Arcade, then return to the park without descending to the beach. This avoids the full downhill-and-uphill beach leg, though local slopes and uneven surfaces remain.
Follow Ocean Avenue from village courtyards to Carmel Beach, then return uphill through town.

Ocean Avenue is Carmelās main street, but some of its most interesting spaces sit behind the storefronts: an indoor arcade, a brick hotel courtyard and a fountain court just off the avenue. This walk connects them with the sand at the foot of the hill.
Begin at Devendorf Park, Ocean Avenue and Junipero Street, and walk west to Carmel Beach at Ocean Avenue. Return the same way to finish where you started. Courtyard stops are optional side trips, not a continuous public passage.
Village walking map
The line is a schematic one-way orientation along Ocean Avenue, not surveyed sidewalk geometry. Courtyard detours and the uphill return are not drawn. The directions button is also one-way via the Pine Inn; it does not include the other courtyards or return.
Stop 1 Ā· Devendorf Park
From the park at Junipero and Ocean, follow Ocean Avenue west. The storefronts and galleries are the direct route; the courts offer a different scale of village architecture just off the street. Keep Ocean Avenue as your reference point and return to it after each detour.
Optional detour Ā· Mission Street
At Mission Street, turn south toward Seventh Avenue for the Court of the Fountains. Its open-air court gathers shops and dining around fountains. Return north to Ocean Avenue rather than assuming the court is a through route. Businesses set their own hours and passage access can change.

Stop 2 Ā· Ocean Avenue
Continue west to the south side of Ocean near San Carlos Street for Doud Arcade, an indoor cluster of shops. Farther west, look for the Pine Inn Courtyard and its brick terrace, a different kind of space set back from the avenue. Browse either as access permits, then rejoin Ocean Avenue for the descent.
These are commercial properties, not guaranteed public shortcuts. Respect signs and closures; access and shop hours can change. The Court of the Fountains has stairs toward Seventh Avenue.

Stop 3 Ā· Ocean Avenue and Scenic Road
Ocean Avenue ends at the beach parking area. A sand ramp leads toward the shore, and restrooms are near the lot. Sand and surf are not a level continuation of the village walk. There are no lifeguards; waves, rip currents and undertow can be dangerous, and conditions can change quickly.
To complete the walk, retrace Ocean Avenue uphill to Devendorf Park. If that climb is not comfortable, make the beach the endpoint and arrange a pickup instead.
Visit the Court of the Fountains and Doud Arcade, then return to the park without descending to the beach. This avoids the full downhill-and-uphill beach leg, though local slopes and uneven surfaces remain.
From Ocean Avenue, follow the coastal pathway south beside Scenic Road for as long as comfortable, then retrace your steps to Ocean Avenue before the uphill return. It is an out-and-back addition, not part of the mapped line. Check current access and stair closures first.
Check posted parking limits and current beach notices. Dogs must be leashed in the village and on the Scenic Pathway; on Carmel Beach they may be off leash under voice control. The city asks owners to leash dogs before leaving via stairs or ramps.
